IWSG: Replying to Comments

Hosted by Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh!

I read every comment that's on my blog, but I don't reply to them. I may reply to a few comments via email. I usually have nothing much to say, so I don't reply them. I know it can start a good conversation with a friend, but I get to do that on Facebook.

Should I reply to comments or not?

18 comments:

  1. I TRY to respond to all comments, but I FAIL miserably... and I don't even do FB... yikes!

  2. It's nice to reply to comments when you can... lets people know that you've heard them. But not every comment NEEDS a reply (like this one ;))

  3. I don't think there is a "should" in this plan, truly. In fact, I think we can drive ourselves nuts with the shoulds of blogging. I love to respond to comments in my blog-- I love the dialogue that can happen and even have people come back to respond to my responses. But it's fun for me. For others, it's a hassle.

  4. I don't reply to all of them, but I reply to a few in one batch comment on my blog. It does show interaction and can spur more comments. But we each have to do what is comfortable for us.

  5. I try to respond, but it never bothers me if the blogs where I comment don't respond back.

  6. I'd say yes, because those blogs where the blog owner does respond are the ones I visit the most. If the blog owner can't be bothered to respond, then why should I comment?

Not everyone is on FB or Twitter. So, what audience are you trying to attract? Whether you comment or not depends on what you're trying to achieve. (e.g., look at how great I am? or I'd like to get to know you?)
Good luck deciding where to spend your efforts.

  7. I reply to a bunch at a time, so people see I respond. :) But I don't think most commenters care. Most prefer a return visit to a reply. If someone asks me a question, I'll respond by email.

I like seeing you on FB :D

  8. I don't always respond to comments, but I usually try to visit that person's website to give them a comment in return. :)

  9. I try to comment to most. Personally, for me, replying is a form of hospitality. readers came to my place and I try to say thank you. I don't always succeed. :-) I do go back to some blogs to see if there is a comment or thought in response.

Everyone handles it differently. Do what you're comfortable with. :-)

  10. I acknowledge them in some way. Usually I pay a return visit to the person's blog as a courtesy. If not that, then email, but many bloggers don't have it connected ('noreply' bloggers).

If the comment they left on my blog asks a question or raises a good discussion point, then I reply on my blog, too.

  11. Not everybody responds to comments, especially if they get a lot of them; some people will write one response to a bunch of commenters. And I think it's fine; you should do whatever you feel comfortable with. I respond, though, mainly because it's usually the same bloggers leaving comments and it's like having a conversation with friends.

  12. I respond to each comment. I don't know that anyone cares or even notices, but I'm a talker...you should see how long it takes me to get through a grocery store!

  13. I don't often reply to comments, but I do try to reciprocate them - so I will go visit the person who left me a comment & comment on their latest post.

  14. I fail miserably at responding to comments but I'm trying to change.

  15. i reply in a more roundabout way. besides, i don't go back to each blog that i commented on JUST to see if they replied back. now that is time consuming!!!

  16. I like to reply back...it's part of the whole post to me. Many times the comments spur discussion and add a whole new element to the article. It also gives me the chance to mention things I may have forgotten.

    1. ML, I hope you do go look for responses to your comments, because I got my email notice of your post on this topic, but the blog page seems to have gone AWOL.

I do try to respond to comments, for the conversation and to let my readers know I am paying attention. And for all the reasons ML talks about in his post which I hope will reappear!

  17. I try to always visit the commenter's blog as a thank you, and many times, I reply by email, too. I've made a lot of friends that way as we can get a discussion going. I tend to read the blogs where I get an interaction. If I visit a blog, and they don't acknowledge my presence in any way, nor do they visit me, then there is no interaction, and that's just not how I blog. I blog for the relationships.
